Chapter Nine
âHold your danged horses, Iâm coming!â
Tired, sated, and sweaty after a long workout at the gym, Carter had been running a cold shower when the doorbell chimed. He charged to answer, bare-chested, bare-footed, and wearing nothing but unbuttoned jeans that slung low over his hips.
Emma stood on his doorstep. Adorable in disarray, she was dressed in loose jeans and the only-shirt-she-hadnât-lostâin-Vegas.
The instant her big brown gaze met his, the corner of his lips kicked up. âBeen thinking,â he said with a crooked smile. ââBout you and me. Holding hands tonight at the Fox. Like boyfriend and girlfriend.â He mocked the last words, but it gave him pleasure to say them. Heâd never really had an official girlfriend before.
âYou think youâre my boyfriend?â
A brow flew up in mock astonishment. âWell, I sure as hell ainât your mother.â Tenderly, he chucked her chin, but she shied away from the touch.
Too late he noticed the emotions passing through her face.
Lust first. Then confusion. Followed by . . . Christ, was that dread?
A bowling ball of fear sank inside his stomach. Was this the part where she told him she couldnât do this anymore? Was this the part where she told him itâs not you; itâs me . . . yadda yadda?
No.
Christ, hell, fucking no. He didnât want to hear this from Emma.
He found himself frowning in concern, leaning against the frame. âYou okay, pumpkin? You didnât make it yesterday and sent such a short text. . . .â
âCan I come in?â she asked, uncertain.
He stepped back to let her pass, and as she brushed past him, her sexual scent made his nostrils flare. His boner thickened in his jeans. Had she been touching herself? His blood coursed hot and his mouth salivated at the thought.
âAre you alone?â she asked. Her concerned eyes scanned the inside of his home, and Carterâs eyebrows furrowed. If he didnât know better, heâd think sheâd escaped from jail and expected to find her parole officer in Carterâs living room.
Her lips, devoid of lipstick, looked swelled and plump. Her hair tumbled across her shoulders, lustrous but tousled. Then he noticed her eyes looked shockingly bloodshot.
His concern growing by the second, Carter ambled closer and seized her elbow firmly in his grasp. âEmma, talk to me,â he murmured, his voice harsh with the force of his worry.
She remained mute, and when he reached over to pull off her T-shirt, she pushed his hands aside.
âNot planninâ to eat you up like a marshmallow yet, pumpkin,â he roughly explained. âI was fixinâ myself a shower but looks like you need it more.â
As though she hadnât heard, Emma sailed down the hall and into his room like she belonged there; then she settled down on the bed and wrapped her hands around herself. Heâd never had such a cute little ball in his bed.
âIâm going crazy.â Her voice sounded rusty.
Frowning, Carter made his way to the bathroom and turned the shower switch so that the water spilled into the bone-colored tub. Letting it fill as he stepped out, he paused inside the room and puzzled as he looked at her.
